Drone Regulations in Costa Rica

If you’re planning to take your drone with you on a trip to Costa Rica, you may be wondering whether you need a license to fly it. The short answer is yes, you do need a license to fly a drone in Costa Rica. However, there are some exceptions to this rule, depending on the size and weight of your drone, as well as where you plan to fly it.

According to the General Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGAC) of Costa Rica, all drones that weigh over 500 grams and are used for commercial or recreational purposes require a license to operate. This applies to both locals and foreign visitors. The license is called a “Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) Operator Certificate” and can be obtained by submitting an application to the DGAC.

To obtain the RPAS Operator Certificate, you’ll need to provide some information about yourself, your drone, and your intended use of the drone. You’ll also need to pass a test that covers the regulations and safety guidelines for drone operation in Costa Rica. The test is available in Spanish and English and can be taken online.

It’s also important to note that there are certain areas in Costa Rica where drone flying is completely prohibited. These include national parks, wildlife refuges, and other protected areas. Flying a drone in these areas can result in fines and other penalties.
